Origin: Originally nomads who moved in search of agricultural land, the Santal live in settled villages of 50 to 100 households each.
Culture and Crafts: The house walls are decorated with figures of animals, humans and flowers.
Occupation: Besides settled cultivation they also migrate to work in mines and industries and as agricultural labour. Tassar rearing for silk and carpentry are other occupations. Bullocks, goats, pigs and fowl are also reared both for sale and domestic consumption.
