Origin: Originally known as Koda due to their occupation of digging and carrying earth; the Mirdha later adopted their current name which means head coolie. They are considered to be a section of the Kisan tribe.
Culture and Crafts: Celebrations like Chaita and Phalguna are occasions for the dhal khai dance which is based on enactments of episodes from the Ramayana, Krishna-Radha sequences and local folklore.
Occupation: Apart from earthwork they also collect forest produce and make leaf plates besides working as agricultural labour.
