Region: The Kisan are scattered over much of Odisha with the major concentration of population being in Sambalpur, Sundergarh and Jharsuguda.

Origin: The term Kisan means cultivator in Hindi, but the community also refer to call themselves as Kunhar. Originally hunter-gatherers, the Kisan are believed to be an offshoot of the Oraon tribe.
Culture and Crafts: Fond of dance and music, they observe the youth festival of Jatra in summer and winter.
Occupation: Skilled in cultivating the land, rice and a minor millet called gulji are their major crops. Women have taken up mat weaving and making of broomsticks from date palm leaves as a household industry, the men are also engaged in brick making and carpentry.
